One of the most charming towns
in Bergen County, Tenafly is highly regarded for its quality
schools, cozy feel, variety of housing styles, and interesting
mix of residents. Settled by the Dutch in the late 17th century,
Tenafly takes its memorable name from the early modern Dutch
phrase “Tiene Vly,” which means “ten swamps.”
While the name persevered, Tenafly is hardly known as swampland
today. New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Tenafly as the 65th
best place to live in New Jersey in its 2008, and the wonderful
schools, cultural and recreational resources, entertainment,
and services show why.

school, and a high school, which ranked third in the state by
New Jersey Monthly magazine in 2008. The public schools offer
advanced placement and honors courses, comprehensive music education,

of Tenafly high school graduates go on to college.

on display year round. Tenafly Public Library is a member of

Tenafly Recreation offers instructional youth sports programs,
seasonal sports clinics, and a six-week summer camp, among other

with many cultural and sports offerings for young people and

The Chabad-Lubavitch center, Lubavitch on the Palisades, serves

The Elizabeth Cady Stanton House in Tenafly was the home of the
famed women's rights activist during her most active years from
1868 to 1887. It is a National Historic Landmark.

bus lines and ferries that run to Manhattan. The region’s
three major airports are reachable by car in less than one hour.
New Jersey transit buses run from Tenafly to Port Authority in
Manhattan in under 45 minutes. Red and Tan buses run to Port
Authority in Manhattan and cross the George Washington Bridge
in under 45 minutes.
Ferries run from nearby Edgewater to 39th Street in Manhattan
every 30 minutes, taking 15 minutes to reach their destination.
