One of the most charming towns in Bergen County, Tenafly is highly regarded for its quality schools, cozy feel, variety of housing styles, and interesting mix of residents. Settled by the Dutch in the late 17th century, Tenafly takes its memorable name from the early modern Dutch phrase “Tiene Vly,” which means “ten swamps.”

While the name persevered, Tenafly is hardly known as swampland today. New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Tenafly as the 65th best place to live in New Jersey in its 2008, and the wonderful schools, cultural and recreational resources, entertainment, and services show why.

Tenafly Schools:

Public schools in Tenafly include four primary schools, a middle school, and a high school, which ranked third in the state by New Jersey Monthly magazine in 2008. The public schools offer advanced placement and honors courses, comprehensive music education, a gifted and talented program, and excellent college preparation that leads to a combined average SAT score of 1761. Some 95 percent of Tenafly high school graduates go on to college.

The Tenafly Nature Center offers hiking trails, a lake and plants on display year round. Tenafly Public Library is a member of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System. It offers access to over 80,000 books, DVDs and other multimedia, as well as children’s programs, group discussions and art exhibitions.

Tenafly Recreation offers instructional youth sports programs, seasonal sports clinics, and a six-week summer camp, among other fun activities for children. A skate park is also available at Roosevelt Common for skateboarders and in-line skaters of all ages.

The Jewish Community Center is one of the largest in the county, with many cultural and sports offerings for young people and families in Bergen County. Indoor and outdoor swimming pools are available, in addition to tennis, racquetball and squash courts, gyms, an indoor track and fitness center. Kids can enroll in nursery school, after school programming, summer camps and year round sports programs.

The Chabad-Lubavitch center, Lubavitch on the Palisades, serves the Jewish community with Torah classes, synagogue services, and assistance with Jewish education and practice.

The Elizabeth Cady Stanton House in Tenafly was the home of the famed women's rights activist during her most active years from 1868 to 1887. It is a National Historic Landmark.

The Knickerbockers Country Club offers golf, tennis and a swimming pool.

Tenafly Senior Center offers weekday activities for adults ages 55 and over from Tenafly and Bergen County towns.

Tenafly Youth Center is open to middle school and high school-aged residents of Tenafly for fun during after school hours, weekends and holidays.

Tenafly Transportation and Commute:

In addition to well-maintained interstate and state roadways for transport by car, Tenafly is served by private and public bus lines and ferries that run to Manhattan. The region’s three major airports are reachable by car in less than one hour.

New Jersey transit buses run from Tenafly to Port Authority in Manhattan in under 45 minutes. Red and Tan buses run to Port Authority in Manhattan and cross the George Washington Bridge in under 45 minutes.

Ferries run from nearby Edgewater to 39th Street in Manhattan every 30 minutes, taking 15 minutes to reach their destination.

Tenafly Pediatrics offers complete health services for children and adolescents.

Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in Englewood, an affiliate of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, provides comprehensive world-class care, with renowned programs in bloodless medicine and cardiac and vascular surgery, and a leading profile in breast care, oncology and joint-replacement services.

Tenafly Entertainment:

Downtown Tenafly offers grocery stores, specialty shops and supply stores to meet everyday needs. Full scale shopping is available at nearby Bergen Mall Shopping Center in Emerson, the Shops at Riverside in Hackensack, and Garden State Plaza in Paramus.

A variety of restaurants and eateries offer quick bites, family style dining and fine cuisine. Offerings include kosher, Italian, Chinese, American, and Mediterranean flavors.
