In the late 17th century, the New York governor Thomas Dongan granted the area that would become Old Tappan to thirteen Dutchmen and three African Americans. Some dining is available in Old Tappan, with options that include family style restaurants and American cuisine. In the nearby town of Closter, a wide array of restaurants with offerings from many ethnicities can be found.

Many Old Tappan residents also shop in Closter, where stores for everyday needs like supermarkets and auto shops mingle with specialized boutiques in the central business district.

The latest films play at Clearview’s Closter Cinema 4 in town.

The state’s largest shopping mall, Westfield Garden State Plaza, located in Paramus, is one of five major shopping malls in Bergen County.
