Demarest is a charming small
town located about eight miles north of the George Washington
Bridge, within easy commuting distance of New York City. The
residential character, wonderful school system, and acres of
forests and recreation space make Demarest an attractive place
to live and raise a family.
The centerpiece of Demarest is the landmark nineteenth-century
railroad station and the Duck Pond, built by residents and volunteers
in 1986 with a dedication to world peace. The popular Peace Site
Gazebo is located at the Duck Pond. Demarest is bordered by other
terrific Bergen County communities, with Closter to the north,
Cresskill to the south, Haworth on the west and Alpine on the

eighth grade. Kindergarten and first grade students attend Country
Road School, and students in grades two through four attend Lee
Emerson School. Demarest Middle School serves children in grades
five through eight.
High school students attend Northern Valley Regional High School
in Demarest, which was ranked 9th among New Jersey public high
schools by New Jersey Monthly magazine in 2008. The school has
received the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United
States Department of Education, the highest award a school can
receive. Its highly regarded music department has won North American

Demarest Transportation and Commute:
Demarest is commuter friendly, with Route 9W and the Palisades Interstate Parkway
along its eastern boundary to give the town easy access to the George Washington
Bridge, a gateway to Manhattan.
New Jersey Transit bus service and private bus company service is available from
Demarest to the George Washington Bridge bus terminal and the Port Authority
Bus Terminal in Manhattan.
There is no train service in Demarest, but trains are available in nearby River
Edge and Hackensack, each about 15-20 minutes driving distance by car, which
offer park and ride stations. Trains ride to Hoboken Terminal with connections
via the Secaucus Junction transfer station to New York Penn Station.
Ferry service is available to points in Manhattan from New York Waterway.
Newark Liberty International Airport and La Guardia Airport are about a 35 minutes’ drive
away, and JFK International Airport is about one hour away by car.

The Demarest Railroad Station, built in 1874 in honor of state
senator Ralph S. Demarest, stands as a monument to the town’s
founding family. It was designed by J. Cleveland Cady, architect
for the Metropolitan Opera House and the Museum of Natural History,
and built from stone quarried from the slopes of the Palisades.
The Old Church Cultural Center is housed in the building that
was the first community’s first church built in 1874. The
OCCC includes the Art School and Center Gallery at Old Church.
The art school offers courses in arts and crafts from beginner
level to advanced professionals.
The Demarest Nature Center opened year round is dedicated to
the preservation of nature and education about the importance
of protecting the environment. It includes hiking trails and
a brook along which people walk and jog in fresh air.
The nearby Closter Nature Center and Tenafly Nature Center also
offer trails and brooks to explore with outdoor recreation opportunities.
The Demarest Public Library, a member of the Bergen County Cooperative
Library System, contains nearly 30,000 books and audio and video
media, along with cultural and educational events.
The Demarest Senior Recreation Center located at the Demarest
Railroad Station is open daily except Tuesdays, and open for
residents ages 55 and up. Meetings are held monthly, and activities
include bingo, arts and crafts, and monthly trips to Atlantic
The Demarest Swim Club offers two large pools and a children's
pool with facilities for picnics, volleyball, and other activities.
Swimming and diving lessons are available for all ages as well
as competitive teams for children under 18. The pool is open
from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The JCC (Jewish Community Center) in nearby Tenafly is one of
the largest in Bergen County, with sports indoor and outdoor
swimming pools, and spaces for cultural events and community
recreational activities in a state-of-the-art building about
a 10-minute drive from Demarest.
Nearby country clubs and golf courses are available for membership
to Demarest residents.
The downtown Demarest business district consists of few shops and restaurants
in order to maintain the town’s quiet residential feel. Services available
include a bank, post office, library, and Borough Hall. Many more restaurants
and stores are available in nearby towns like Closter and Tenafly.

Rockland Coaches on route 20 and 20T, which stops by the Duck Pond on County
Route 505, services the Palisades Center, a popular shopping destination in West
