Cresskill is a charming bedroom community in Bergen County outside New York City, just minutes from the George Washington Bridge. The town took its name from the watercress that grew in its streams, which are also called “kills.”

Like many communities in the United States, Cresskill began to boom in development after World War II when veterans returned and sought suburban homes with their families. It continues to offer a cozy and safe small town feel, and shares many resources with neighboring communities like Tenafly.

Cresskill offers three public schools that together serve students in grades kindergarten through twelve. Cresskill High School ranked 93rd in the nation in the 2005 Newsweek rankings, and ranked 15th statewide in 2006.

There is one Catholic school that serves students from preschool through eighth grade.

Cresskill Cultural and Recreational Resources:

The Cresskill Municipal Pool offers summertime recreation. Other summer programs include tennis courts and athletic fields, which feature sports like soccer, Little League, baseball, softball, and football. Wrestling and basketball are available indoors.

The town hosts an annual Fourth of July celebration and Ragamuffin Halloween parade.

Cresskill Public Library is a member of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System. Members may borrow books, DVDs and other media, and enjoy educational programs and exhibitions.

The Tamcrest Country Club in nearby Alpine offers a golf course.

Camp Merrit Memorial Monument, a large obelisk known by locals as “The Monument,” commemorates the fact that Cresskill was the major debarkation point for more than one million American troops sent overseas in World War I.

The Tenafly Nature Center located nearby is just a short drive from Cresskill and open year round with hiking trails, a natural lake and various botany. Nature centers also are located in neighboring Closter and Demarest.

Cresskill Transportation and Commute:

New Jersey Transit buses provide service from Cresskill to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan in about 35 minutes, and local service to points in New Jersey is also available. Private bus companies provide service to Rockland County and the George Washington Bridge and Port Authority Bus Terminal in 35 minutes.

No train service runs between Cresskill and Manhattan.

The region’s three major airports - Newark Liberty International, JFK International and La Guardia Airport – can be reached in under 45 minutes by car.

Cresskill medical facilities are available in nearby Englewood and Teaneck.

Cresskill Entertainment:

Cresskill food offerings include a mix of fine dining, casual eateries, cafes, and bars. Asian and Italian cuisine is well represented among the selections.

Restaurants are centered in a quaint downtown business area, where shops, banks, the public library, and borough hall also are located. Most of Cresskill is quiet and residential rather than commercial.

Movie theaters in nearby Closter and Tenafly show the latest films from Hollywood.
